 Gene Cook came to The University of Toledo from Cleveland, Ohio. He won nine varsity letters in the sports of football, basketball and baseball and even competed as a varsity wrestler upon occasion to help the Rocket team win a few matches. Gene Cook starred as an end in football during 1955-1957, catching 44 passes good for 784 yards and six touchdowns. He had a possible career with the Detroit Lions but was ended by an injury and later played professionally with the old Toledo Tornadoes. Gene lettered in basketball in 1956-1958 and in baseball during the same years as a second baseman, outfielder, and pitcher, he hit .361 as a senior. Long active in UT alumni activities and for many years a member of city council, Gene is the city's Vice-Mayor and General Manager of the Toledo Mud Hens.
