TOLEDO, OH – Toledo sent their senior class off with a win against Kent State (8-11-0, 4-6-0) on Sunday in overtime, in 2-1. The match was the final regular season home contest of the year, and puts the Rockets at 8-11-0 and 4-6-0 in Mid-American Conference play.
First-year head coach TJ Buchholz knows what it means to win on "Senior Day."
"Our seniors are a special group and they've had a great career here," Buchholz said. "To send them off with a win against a strong Kent State team is wonderful. We couldn't be more proud of them."
The match was highly contested and very physical throughout. Sophomore Isa Echeverri broke open the scoring when she collected a rebound off of the crossbar and found the back of the net in the 66th minute. 10 minutes later, Donovan Capehart evened the score for KSU, which would send the match to overtime. During the fifth minute of overtime, sophomore Regan Price was fouled in the box to earn a penalty. Echeverri beat the keeper on the PK, and won the contest for UT.
"We knew this team would fight until the end of the match," Buchholz said. "They knew their backs were against the wall because of the postseason situation but they battled hard."
Echeverri knew what she needed to do to get the match-winner.
"I had to step up for the team in that moment," Echeverri said. "We picked up a lot of confidence after winning two matches."
Once again, UT limited the opponent's quality chances. Toledo outshot the Golden Flashes 11-10 during the match, but only allowed three shots on goal during the contest.Â
