Toledo, OH – The Toledo women’s tennis team fought valiantly but still lost today vs. Miami, 6-1, at Laurel Hill Tennis Club.
“This match felt a lot closer than 6-1,” Head Coach Tracy Mauntler said. “I don’t think we played our best but I was proud of the way we battled today. To beat a team like this, everyone at each spot must be playing very well and that just didn’t happen for us today.”
Sophomore Martina Wodzinski won the No. 1 singles match for the Rockets' only point of the match, snapping her three-match losing streak. She dropped the first set 2-6 to MU’s Anastasia Dracheva before coming back and winning the next two, 6-1, 6-3. Toledo lost the doubles points despite the efforts of senior Sarah Horning and junior Jenny Belsky, who beat Miami’s Megan Martzolf and Victoria Pulido at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.
“I am very happy for Martina,” Mauntler said. “She has had some really close, tough matches lately and it was great to see her come out on top today. She gave Dracheva her first loss of the season."
Losing for the first time in eight matches was sophomore Nadia Zoubareva, who fell to Kelly Douple, 6-2 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
The Rockets will next play Ball State on Saturday, April 5 at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts starting at 1:00 p.m. It will be Senior Day for two Rocket seniors, Sarah Horning and Sarah VanderMolen, and UT's final home match of the season.
