Toledo Cruises Past Dayton in Mid-Week Matchup, 10-2
TOLEDO, OH – Toledo jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 10-2 triumph over Dayton on Tuesday at Scott Park. With the win, the Rockets improve to 12-18 on the season.
UT scored seven runs in its first two at-bats to record its second win against the Flyers (7-20-1) this spring. The Midnight Blue & Gold also posted a 6-1 victory over the reigning Atlantic 10 regular-season and tourney champions on March 12 at Woerner Field.
Senior RHP Jared Locke (1-2) shrugged off a rough first inning and put together a solid pitching performance to record his first win of the spring. Locke allowed two runs (all earned) on six hits with three strikeouts in a season-high 5.0 frames. The Dundee, MI native gave up both runs on four hits in UD’s opening at-bat.
Freshman RHP Kevin Kline, sophomore RHP Adam Tyson and senior LHP Ben Hammer came on in relief of Locke and did not allow a single hit over the final 4.0 innings to close out the impressive home victory.
Offensively, junior LF Tyler Grogg (3-for-4, 3 RS, 2 SB) led the Midnight Blue & Gold with a game-high three hits, while senior 1B Matt Delewski (2-for-3, 3 RS), senior CF Ben Hammer (2-for-5, 5 RBI), senior RF Andy Mix (2-for-4, 3 RBI) and sophomore SS Nate Langhals (2-for-4, RS) also recorded multi-hit efforts against four Dayton pitchers.
The visitors did all their damage in their opening at-bat, taking advantage of a RBI single by Jared Broughton (1-for-4, RBI) and a run-scoring groundout by Aaron Huesman (1-for-4).
The Rockets quickly retaliated with a three-run single off the bat of Mix and a RBI single by Delewski in the bottom of the first frame to assume an advantage they would not relinquish.
UT added to its lead with three runs in the second inning on the strength of a two-run single by Hammer and a sacrifice fly by Delewski.
The score remained the same until the fourth frame when Hammer belted a two-out RBI double to make the difference 8-2.
Toledo then finished off the scoring with a two-out, run-scoring double by sophomore DH Anthony Smith (1-for-3, RS, RBI) in the sixth and a pinch-hit RBI single off the bat of freshman 1B Tyler Baar (1-for-1, RBI) in the eighth to set the final margin at 10-2.
UD Joe Wahl (1-4) was saddled with the loss, yielding four runs (all earned) on three hits in 1.0 inning. The Flyers did not have a single player with more than one hit in the non-league matchup.
The Rockets will look to win their third-consecutive contest tomorrow when they travel to Kent State. The first pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m. at Schoonover Stadium.
