ROCHESTER, NY – Toledo split a doubleheader against Buffalo on Saturday in Mid-American Conference action at Monroe Community College. The Rockets registered a 6-0 victory in the nightcap after suffering a 3-1 setback in today’s opener. With the triumph in the series finale, UT’s record moves to 11-18 overall, 4-5 in the league.

Senior 1B/DH Matt Delewski (4-for-8) led the reigning MAC West Division champions with four hits in today’s twinbill.  Senior CF Ben Hammer (3-for-9) and sophomore SS Nate Langhals (3-for-6) also enjoyed good performances at the plate this afternoon, finishing with three hits each.

In Game Two, junior LHP Ryan Wilkinson (3-2) went the distance for the second time in his last three starts to record his team-tying best third victory in 2013. The southpaw hurler allowed only four hits with four punchouts to tally the complete-game shutout. Wilkinson was simply superb all afternoon and retired the Bulls in order on four occasions to help the Midnight Blue & Gold halt a six-game losing skid.

Offensively, Delewski (3-for-4, RS, RBI) paced UT with three hits in the nightcap, while sophomore DH Anthony Smith (2-for-5, 2 RS), freshman 2B Deion Tansel (2-for-3, RBI), Hammer (2-for-5, RBI) and Langhals (2-for-4, 2 RS) had two apiece. In total, every Toledo starter recorded a hit against three UB hurlers. The Rockets finished with 15 hits after totaling 10 hits in the first two games combined.

The Rockets did all their damage over the final five innings to avoid the weekend sweep. UT tallied two runs in the eighth frame and single tallies in the fifth, sixth and seventh.

Toledo opened the scoring on a RBI single by Delewski and added to its advantage on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman 3B John Martillotta (1-for-4, RS, 2 RBI) and a run-scoring double by Hammer.

UT continued to pour it offensively and utilized a RBI double by Tansel and a run-scoring infield single by junior LF Tyler Grogg (1-for-4, RBI) in the eighth inning to make the difference 5-0.

The visitors then finished off the scoring with an insurance tally in their final at-bat on a RBI groundout off the bat of Martillotta.

UB's Mike Burke (4-3) was tagged with the loss, yielding three runs (all earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings. No Buffalo batter had more than one hit in the contest.

In today’s opener, Buffalo's (16-13, 6-3 MAC) Anthony Magnovney outdueled Toledo junior RHP Cameron Palmer (1-2) on the mound.

Palmer (1-2) allowed three runs (all earned) on seven hits with four punchouts in a career-high 8.0 innings, while Magnovney (4-2) was just a little better, giving up one run (all earned) on five hits with six punchouts in 9.0 frames.

UB tallied the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly by Thomas Richards (0-for-2, RBI) in the fourth inning.

The home team padded their lead with a two-run single off the bat of Jon Mestas (2-for-3, 2 RBI) to build an insurmountable margin.

The Rockets fought to the bitter end and received a run-scoring groundout by Delewski (1-for-4) but it was not enough as they suffered the two-run setback.

Toledo will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 9 when it hosts Dayton. The first pitch from Scott Park is slated for 3:05 p.m.
