Toledo Runs Away from Dayton in Non-League Tilt, 6-1
UT scored four runs in its initial at-bat to build an advantage it would not surrender en route to claiming its second triumph in the last three games.
Junior RHP Cameron Palmer (1-0) was perfect over the first 3.0 innings in a controlled start to earn his first victory of the season. Palmer faced only 10 UD batters and recorded five strikeouts to pick up his second collegiate win.
The Canton, OH native has been outstanding in four appearances in 2013, giving up only four runs (all earned) on 10 hits with a team-high 18 punchouts in 13.0 frames.
Sophomore RHP Alec Schmenk came on in relief and yielded three hits over the ensuing 3.0 innings to maintain the shutout.
The trio of senior RHP Jared Locke, junior RHP Cody Umbright and sophomore RHP Adam Tyson then each worked 1.0 frames to close out the impressive road victory.
The UT pitchers combined to retire UD in order on five occasions and faced only four batters two other times this afternoon.
Offensively, senior DH Matt Delewski (3-for-4, 2 RS, RBI) fueled the attack with a game-high three hits and one walk. Delewski has now hit safely in nine of the last 10 games, posting six multi-hit efforts during this stretch.
In total, eight UT starters collected at least one hit against six UD hurlers.
The Rockets wasted little time in setting the tone in today's non-league matchup, sending nine batters to the plate and pounding out five hits to establish an early 4-0 advantage. Six of the first seven Toledo hitters reached base against Dayton's Joe Wahl (0-2). Senior CF Ben Hammer (1-for-4, RS, RBI), junior C James Miglin (1-for-3, RBI), freshman 1B Tyler Baar (1-for-4, RBI) and senior RF Andy Mix (1-for-4, RBI) were each credited with run-scoring hits in the inning.
With the UT pitchers in control, the score remained the same until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Flyers finally broke up the shutout. The home team took advantage of two hits, two wild pitches, one stolen base and a pinch-hit RBI single by Aaron Huesman to deny the Rockets their first blanking in 2013.
Toledo was quick to retaliate though, plating a pair of tallies in the ninth to extend the margin and make the final score 6-1. The big hit in the frame was a RBI single off the bat of Delewski.
UD's Wahl was strapped with the loss, surrendering four runs (all earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts.
The Rockets will look to continue its solid play as of late with four games at the Panther Classic in Pittsburgh on Friday-Sunday, March 15-17. UT will play Niagara each of the first two days at Noon, before tangling with the host Panthers on two occasions over the final two days at 3:00 p.m.
