YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Toledo defeated Youngstown State, 6-2, on Tuesday in its non-league finale under the lights at Eastwood Field. With the win, UT improves to 21-30 on the season.

The Rockets received an outstanding pitching effort from sophomore RHP Kyle Slack and clutch hitting by sophomore RF Ryan Callahan (4-for-5, 2 RS, 2 RBI) and freshman CF Jacob Britt (3-for-4, RBI) to establish some positive momentum heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

On the mound, Slack (4-6) allowed a mere one hit with three punchouts in 6.0 shutout innings to earn his fourth victory of the spring. The Edwardsburg, MI native faced only 22 batters and did not give up a hit until the fourth frame.

Offensively, Callahan blasted his third round tripper of the season and totaled a career-tying best four hits, while Britt had a season-high three hits. The duo combined for seven hits and three RBI.

Other significant factors in UT’s lineup this evening vs. YSU were senior 1B Jacob North (2-for-5, 2 RS), sophomore SS Deion Tansel (2-for-5) and freshman DH Jake Krupar (2-for-4) with two hits each against a quartet of YSU hurlers.

UT jumped on the scoreboard first with one run in both the second and third innings to establish a lead it would not relinquish. The visitors plated the first tally on a RBI groundout off the bat of senior 2b Zack Michael (0-for-3, 2 RBI) and the other tally on a solo home run by junior LF Dan ZuchowskI (1-for-4, 2 RS, RBI).

The score remained the same until the sixth when Toledo plated two tallies to make the difference 4-0. Britt collected a one-out RBI single to post the team’s third run, before Michael drew a bases loaded walk to register the other tally.

The Penguins finally broke up the shutout when 2B Phil Lipari (1-for-4, RS, RBI) clubbed a solo home run and DH David Saluga (2-for-4, RBI) followed with a RBI single in the eighth inning to cut the deficit in half at 4-2.

Toledo would respond though with a two-run home run off the bat of Callahan in the ninth to extend the margin and make the final score 6-2.

YSU RHP Jeremy Quinlan (0-2) was saddled with tonight’s setback, surrendering two runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work.

The Rockets will conclude their regular season with a huge three-game series against MAC West Division rival Eastern Michigan on May 15-17 at home. First pitch on Thursday and Friday is slated for 3:05 p.m. at the corner of Hill Ave. and Parkside Blvd., while Saturday’s contest will start at 1:05 p.m.

UT is currently tied for fourth place in the MAC West Division and tied for ninth in the overall standings with only three contests left. The top eight teams as determined by conference winning percentage (MAC play only), regardless of division, will participate in the post-season, double-elimination tournament, which is slated to start at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, OH on Wednesday, May 21. - Your Source for Rocket Sports
