MOUNT PLEASANT, MI - Senior left-hander Ryan Wilkinson (5-4) scattered eight hits over eight innings to limit Central Michigan to just a single run on Friday afternoon as Toledo handed the Chippewas an 8-1 Mid-American Conference defeat at Theunissen Stadium.

The victory lifted the Rockets’ record to 18-25 overall and 9-10 in league play, while CMU suffered its fifth straight league loss to fall to 27-19 (12-7 MAC).

Senior C James Miglin spearheaded UT’s 14-hit attack with three hits, while sophomore RF Ryan Callahan, sophomore 3B John Martillotta, SS Deion Tansel and junior LF Dan Zuchowski each posted a pair of base knocks.

CMU starter Jordan Foley (5-4) lasted seven innings, but allowed 13 hits. He was charged with all eight of Toledo’s runs, only four of which were earned as the Chippewas committed three errors.

The Rockets plated a run in the second inning on senior DH Jacob North’s groundout and two more in the third on run-scoring singles from Miglin and Martilotta to stake Wilkinson to a 3-0 lead. Two of the runs were unearned as the Chippewas committed an error in each inning.

Toledo tacked on three more in the fourth and two in the fifth to provide Wilkinson with plenty of cushion.

Foley retired the first two batters in the fourth, but a hit batsman, three consecutive singles from Zuchowski, Callahan and Baar, and a passed ball opened the door. In the fifth, Martillotta ignited the inning with a leadoff with Tansel and Zuchowski also notching base hits.

The Chippewas and Rockets square off in game two of the series on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. at Theunissen. The series finale is Sunday at 1:05 p.m.

Senior right-hander Pat Kaminska will start Saturday for the Chippewas against freshman righty Sam Shutes. Kaminska is 6-2 with a MAC-best 2.38 earned run average, while Shutes is 3-2 with a 3.81 ERA.
