TOLEDO, OH – Toledo prevailed late against Dayton, 5-4, on Wednesday in non-league action at Scott Park. With the win, UT improves to 16-23 on the season.

The Rockets scored four runs in the eighth inning to rebound from yesterday’s setback at Michigan State. The home team batted around in the frame against two UD (18-20) hurlers to turn a three-run deficit into a one-run lead. They collected three hits in the at-bat and benefitted from three Dayton wild pitches and one miscue to record their second win against their intrastate opponent this spring. UT also claimed an 11-6 triumph at Dayton on March 19.

Sophomore SS Deion Tansel (2-for-3, RS) started the game-changing eighth by reaching base on a Dayton error against LHP Tommy Konrad. After a wild pitch moved Tansel into scoring position, sophomore RF Ryan Callahan (1-for-4, RS, RBI) ripped a one-out, two-run double into the gap in right-center field to make the difference 4-2. Senior C James Miglin (0-for-3) then drew to a two-out walk, and he and Callahan advanced to second and third base on another wild pitch from Konrad. Following another UD pitching change, senior 1B Jacob North (1-for-4, RS, 2 RBI) laced a two-strike, two-run single up the middle to draw the teams even at 4-4. Freshman CF Jacob Britt (1-for-4) then singled down the right-field line to advance North to third base. Moments later, the Barberton, OH native scored the eventual game-winning run on another wild pitch from RHP Charlie Dant (4-5) to give the home team a lead they would not relinquish.

Junior RHP Andrew Marra (2-2), the fifth of six UT pitchers to toe the rubber in today’s non-league matchup, was credited with the victory. Marra worked a scoreless eighth frame to earn his second win of the spring.

Senior RHP Adam Tyson came on in the ninth and retired all three batters he faced to record his fifth save in 2014, tied for fifth-most in school history in a single season.

Offensively, Tansel led the Midnight Blue & Gold with a game-tying best two hits, while North recorded a contest-tying high two RBI.

Dayton scored first on a RBI single by RF Aaron Huesman (1-for-3, 2 RBI) in the top of the third. The Flyers pounded out three singles against UT junior RHP Alec Schmenk to jump out to the early lead.

The Rockets retaliated with one run on a RBI single off the bat of freshman LF Jake Krupar (1-for-3, RBI) in the bottom of the third. With two outs in the inning, UT pounded out three-straight singles to knot the score at 1-1.

UD recaptured the advantage with a sacrifice fly from Huesman and a RBI double by DH Mark Podlas (1-for-3, RBI) in the fifth. The visitors took advantage of three walks and only one hit to give them a two-run cushion.

Dayton then extended its margin with a two-out RBI double by CF Al Harris (2-for-3, RS, RBI) in the sixth to set the stage for UT’s late-game comeback.

UD’s Dant was saddled with the setback, allowing one unearned run on two hits with one free walk and one strikeout in 0.1 innings of relief work.

The visitors also received an outstanding starting effort from RHP Brad Burkhart in a no-decision. Burkhart gave up only one run (one earned) on five hits with three punchouts over the opening 7.0 frames.

Dayton was paced by C Matt Poland (2 -for-4) and Harris with a contest-tying best two hits each.

The Rockets will now travel to Oxford, OH for three games vs. Miami on Friday-Sunday, April 25-27 at McKie Field. Friday’s first pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m., Saturday’s will begin at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday’s finale will start at 1:00 p.m.
