Rockets Notch 6-4 Victory to Complete Road Sweep of Northern Illinois
DeKALB, IL- Toledo completed a doubleheader sweep at Northern Illinois on Saturday with a 6-4 victory in the second game of a twinbill at Ralph McKinzie Field. With the two wins, the Rockets (12-15-1) evened their Mid-American Conference record at 4-4, while the Huskies (5-21-1) fell to 2-6 in league play.
Freshman LF Jordan Kesson paced a 13-hit UT attack with three hits, while sophomore SS Deion Tansel, senior C James Miglin, sophomore RF Ryan Callahan and sophomore 1B Tyler Baar each collected two hits apiece.
Freshman RHP Sam Shutes (2-1) picked up the victory for the Rockets by allowing just four hits and three runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings.
The Rockets took a quick lead for a second-straight game. After plating five runs in the opening frame in the opener, UT put together a two-out rally to notch the contest’s first run. Junior 3B Dan Zuchowski drew a walk and stole second base before being driven home by Callahan.
Kesson increased the Rockets’ advantage to 2-0 with a single up the middle in the fourth inning. UT added another marker when Baar scored on a balk by NIU senior RHP Eli Anderson.
Grogg and Miglin delivered RBI singles in the seventh inning, while Zuchowski’s groundout accounted for another run to put Toledo up 6-0.
Northern Illinois put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh but could only come within two runs of the Rockets.
Junior RHP Andrew Marra and senior RHP Adam Tyson retired the side in order in both the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to preserve the victory.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow with a single game set for 1:05 p.m. CDT first pitch.
