MOUNT PLEASANT, SC – Toledo limited No. 29 College of Charleston to four hits and claimed an impressive 5-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Patriots Point. With the win, the Rockets snap a four-game losing skid and improve to 3-6 on the season.

Playing its fifth-straight contest against a ranked opponent, a trio of UT hurlers stymied a potent Cougars’ (10-2) offense and recorded 13 strikeouts to halt the home teams’ nine-game win streak.

Sophomore LHP Ross Achter (1-0) was credited with his first collegiate victory in his initial college start, giving up one unearned run on two hits with five punchouts in 5.0 innings of work.

Freshman LHP Steven Calhoun came on in relief of Achter and was equally effective, allowing only one hit with five strikeouts in 3.0 scoreless frames of relief duty.

Senior RHP Adam Tyson then finished off the dominating road victory by striking out the side in the ninth.

Offensively, junior DH Cory Finkler (2-for-3, 2 RS), sophomore SS Deion Tansel (2-for-3, RS, 2 RBI) and freshman RF Jacob Britt (2-for-4, RS) paced the Rockets with two hits each. Tansel continued his torrid pace to begin this spring, posting multiple hits in seven of the game contests.

Sophomore 1B Tyler Baar (1-for-5, 2 RBI) and Tansel were also credited with two RBI apiece.

The score was tied 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning when UT’s Baar ripped a two-run double to give the visitors a 3-1 lead. It proved to be an advantage the Midnight Blue & Gold would not surrender.

Toledo added solo tallies in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Tansel and the eighth on a RBI groundout off the bat of senior LF Zack Michael (0-for-1, RBI) to make the final score 5-2.

The Cougars’ Tyler Thornton (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs (all earned) on eight hits with three punchouts in 5.1 innings of work.

The Rockets return to the diamond tomorrow when they play The Citadel at the College of Charleston at 4:00 p.m.
