Toledo Splits Two Season-Opening Games at Ron Fraser Classic
Sophomore 3B Anthony Smith (4-for-8, RS) paced UT offensively with four hits in the two neutral-site contests, while junior C James Miglin (3-for-8, 2 RS, 2 RBI) totaled three hits.
In tonight's nightcap, the Rockets benefitted from an outstanding start by senior LHP Kyle Shaw to earn their first win of the spring. The southpaw hurler yielded only three hits with six strikeouts in 6.0 scoreless innings to collect the victory. Shaw, who sat out last spring with an arm injury, stymied the Blue Hens and faced 22 batters, recording only one walk.
Freshman RHP Caleb Shillace came on in relief of Shaw and worked 2.2 quality frames, giving up one run on two hits with two punchouts.
Senior LHP Ben Hammer then closed out the two-run triumph, fanning the only batter he faced in the bottom of the ninth inning to tally the save.
Offensively, Miglin (2-for-3, RS) led Toledo with a multi-hit effort.
Toledo opened the scoring on a solo home run off the bat of freshman RF Ryan Callahan (1-for-5, RS, RBI) in the third frame. It proved to be a lead they would not relinquish.
The score did not change until freshman 1B Tyler Baar (1-for-4, 2 RBI) delivered a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning to extend UT's margin to 3-0.
Delaware made the situation interesting in its final at-bat, sending nine batters to the dish and had the game-tying run at the plate, but Toledo's Hammer recorded a punchout to preserve the victory.
The Blue Hens' Adam Davis was saddled with the setback, giving up one run (one earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
In today's opener, the Explorers scored four runs in the top of the ninth frame to collect the one-run win.
Senior RHP Jared Locke (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits in 0.1 innings.
Smith (3-for-5, RS) fueled the Rockets attack with three hits. Senior DH Matt Delewski (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and senior RF Andy Mix (2-for-4, RS) also tallied multi-hit efforts in the season opener.
Junior LHP Ryan Wilkinson drew the start in today's season opener and yielded four runs on six hits with three punchouts over the opening 6.0 innings in a no-decision.
The Rockets exploded out of the gates and scored three runs in their first at-bat on the strength of a two-run double by Miglin.
La Salle retaliated with a single tally in the second frame and three runs in the fourth to make the difference, 4-3. The visitors on the scoreboard took advantage of
three hits and one UT fielding error to assume a one-run bulge.
LU's advantage did not last long though, as Toledo countered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to establish a 7-4 cushion. The Midnight Blue & Gold sent seven batters to the plate against a pair of La Salle hurlers and received two-run hits from sophomore SS Nate Langhals (1-for-4, RS, 2 RBI) and Delewski.
Toledo maintained the lead until the ninth when La Salle plated four runs on five hits to capture the one-run victory. The first four LU batters reached base and came around to score against a trio of UT pitchers to spell doom for the Rockets. The big hits in the inning were a two-run pinch-hit double from JT Crits (1-for-1, 2 RBI) and a two-run single off the bat of 3B Dan Klem (1-for-5, 2 RBI).
LaSalle RHP Alec Baum (1-0) was credited with the win, allowing no runs on one hit in 3.0 relief frames.
The Rockets are scheduled to battle Albany and Villanova tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. and
5:30 p.m., respectively.
