UT pounded the ball across the park against five Red Foxes' pitchers and tallied 13 hits, the second-highest total of the season. The first five hitters in Toledo's lineup - senior 2B Joe Corfman (2-for-4, 4 RS), senior CF Ben Hammer (2-for-5, 2 RBI), senior 1B Mark Lapikas (2-for-3, RS, 2 RBI), sophomore C James Miglin (1-for-4, RS, 2 RBI) and senior DH Jeff Cola (3-for-4, 2 RBI) - did a bulk of the damage and combined for 10 hits, six runs scored and eight RBI.
Toledo's offensive provided more than enough support for junior RHP Jared Locke (1-3), who won his first game of the season. Locke was effective over the first 6.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
After spotting Marist a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Rockets countered with a pair of runs in their first at-bat on RBI hits from Miglin and Cola.
The Red Foxes knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the third frame on a RBI single by Zach Shank, but UT retaliated with two runs in the bottom of the inning on run-scoring hits from Lapikas and Cola to assume an advantage it would not relinquish.
The Rockets then broke the game open with four tallies in the fourth inning. The big hit in the frame was a two-run single off the bat of Hammer to make the score 8-2. Junior RF Andy Mix was also credited with a RBI single and Miglin collected a sacrifice fly to build a six-run cushion.
The teams then traded runs late to make the final difference 9-3.
Marist's Brett Houseal (0-2) was tagged with the loss, yielding eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits with one strikeout in 3.0 innings. The Red Foxes were paced by two hits each from Jake Berry, Mike Orefice and Mark Swertfager.
The Rockets return to action on Wednesday, March 14 when they play at Dayton at 4:00 p.m.
