A trio of Cougars' (8-3) hurlers held UT to three singles off the bats of senior 2B Joe Corfman, sophomore C James Miglin and freshman 3B Anthony Smith to hand the Midnight Blue & Gold its fifth straight loss.
Sophomore LHP Ryan Wilkinson (1-1) was tremendous in a losing effort, allowing the two runs on four hits with a career-high six punchouts in a collegiate-best 6.0 innings.
Senior RHP Matt Kuna came on in relief of Wilkinson and retired all six batters he faced over the next two frames to keep the visitors within striking distance.
CofC's Kyle Owings (1-0), the second pitcher to toe the rubber in tonight's non-league matchup, was credited with the victory. Owings yielded only one hit with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief.
The home team also received an outstanding start from Griffin Jones in a no-decision. Jones gave up two hits with four punchouts over the opening 5.2 frames.
CofC's David Peterson preserved the shutout with a flawless ninth inning to collect the save.
The Cougars scored the game's only runs on a one-out triple by Marty Gantt in the sixth frame. The home squad strung together a pair of singles to lead off the game-changing inning, before Gantt ripped a three-base hit into the gap in right field to give CofC a lead it would not relinquish.
The Rockets return to action tomorrow when they travel to Conway, SC to battle perennial power Coastal Carolina. The first pitch against the Chanticleers will be at 1:00 p.m. from Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.
