WINTER HAVEN, FL - Toledo returned to the win column with a 9-4 victory over Yale in the opening game of the RussMatt Invitational on Tuesday from Chain of Lakes Stadium. With the triumph, the Rockets improve to 4-6 on the season.
Junior RHP Alex Radon (2-0) continued his excellent start to the 2011 campaign and was credited with win in relief, allowing only one hit in 3.1 innings. In four appearances this spring, Radon has yielded two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts over 13.1 frames.
Freshman RHP Adam Tyson finished off today's five-run neutral-site victory, working the final 2.0 innings and did not give up a hit with three punchouts.
Offensively, junior Joe Corfman (2-for-4, RBI) led the way with two hits, while senior Chris Dudics (1-for-3, RBI, two walks), junior Matt Delewski (1-for-4, 2 RBI) and sophomore Andy Mix (1-for-2, 2 RBI) each had productive afternoons against the Bulldogs.
After spotting Yale a run in the first inning off sophomore RHP Jared Locke, the Rockets plated three runs in the second to take control of the non-league affair. Mix was credited with a two-run bases-loaded double to start the scoring, before Dudics was credited with a sacrifice fly.
UT increased its lead with a run in the fifth off a RBI groundout by Delewski and four tallies in the sixth to create some separation between the teams. Junior Ben Hammer, Corfman and Delewski each registered run-scoring hits in the four-run inning to make it a five-run contest.
The Midnight Blue & Gold then put the game away with an insurance tally in the seven with the aid of a Yale throwing error to make the final difference 9-4.
The Rockets return to action tomorrow when they will face Xavier at 2:30 p.m. at Chain of Lakes Stadium. Freshman RHP Cameron Palmer is slated to make his first collegiate start for UT against the Musketeers.
