Rockets Tied for First After One Day of Competition at MAC Championship
Mt. Pleasant, MI - After the first day of competition at the 2012 Mid-American Conference outdoor track and field championships, Toledo is currently tied for first place with Kent State with 22 points. As these two squads were neck-and-neck throughout the indoor championships, the next two days should prove to be full of suspense.
Three events are complete through the first day, with the Rockets scoring 19 of their points in the 10,000 meters. Ari Fisher made her presence felt with a first-place finish in a time of 35:23.10. Right behind her was teammate Megan Vogelsong, placing second in 35:42.03. Devyn Ramsay, the third Toledo runner in the event, came in eighth with a time of 36:43.49.
UT's other three points came in the javelin, as Carly Molls scored a sixth-place finish, throwing for a distance of 36.02 meters (118-02.00).
"We are exactly where I wanted us to be after the conclusion of the first day of the championship," said head coach Kevin Hadsell. "We did a great job in the 10,000 meters scoring 19 points in that event. Ari Fisher made a great statement to the MAC that she is back to her normal form, and I am excited for the 5000 meters on Saturday with her, Emma Kertesz and Megan Wright.
"I am also so proud of Carly Molls. She walked on after volleyball in the fall and is now a full-time track and field athlete. It's going to be very exciting to see where she is a year from now."
Friday's action will consist of four more event finals on top of a bevy of prelims. Final scores will be added in the shot put, long jump, 3,000-meter steeplechase and the heptathlon.
"Looking ahead to tomorrow, we need to take care of business in the long jump, heptathlon and the steeplechase," Hadsell added. "In addition, we need to qualify everyone onto Saturday in the races we have trials."
