VICTORIA, TX - Sophomore Kate Hoops fired a career-low even-par 72 on Monday to help Toledo to a seventh-place finish at the Claud Jacobs Challenge presented by SCOR Golf.  The tournament was played at the par-72, 6,028-yard Victoria Country Club.
The Rockets jumped three spots as a team in the final round with a 21-over par 309 to finish 54 holes at 98-over par 962. Tournament host Texas State captured the tournament title at 37-over par 901, while Louisiana-Monroe's Ali Lucas earned medalist honors at eight-over par 224 (75-73-76).
"It was very exciting to watch us play today," Toledo Head Coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. "Everyone stepped up their game on a difficult course that was wet, and I think we can really build off our final round."
Hoops, who notched five birdies and five bogeys in her round, led Toledo with an 18th-place showing at 18-over par 234 (80-82-72). She was one stroke ahead of senior Piyathida Chaiyapan (T19th/80-78-78). Rounding out the Rocket lineup were freshman Lauren Stephens (T41st/80-85-79=244), junior Allison Schultz (T58th/85-85-80=250) and freshman Jennifer Elsholz (67th/90-83-82=255). Freshman Stephanie St-Jean competed as an individual and finished in a 44th-place tie at 245 (77-87-81).
"Kate showed the talent she possesses and it was good to see her play aggressively," Hollingsworth said. "She was able to save shots when she needed, and that's what you need to shoot even par."
UT will now be idle until its spring break trip to Rio Verde, AZ to compete in the Rio Verde Invitational on Friday-Sunday, Mar. 9-11.
