VICTORIA, TX - Toledo began its stay in the Lonestar State on a bright note, shooting a 303 on Friday afternoon en route to a dual-match victory over Western Illinois (340) at Colony Creek Country Club.
Senior Piyathida Chaiyapan picked up right where she left off from the fall campaign and led the Rockets by firing a two-under par 70 to match the best round of her collegiate career. Freshman Lauren Stephens enjoyed similar success, producing a career-low round as well with a three-over par 75. Joining the duo with rounds in the 70's were junior Allison Schultz and sophomore Kate Hoops at seven-over par 79. Freshmen Jennifer Elsholz (81) and Stephanie St-Jean (87) also competed for the Rockets.
"It's very exciting to shoot four rounds in the 70's," Toledo Head Coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. "Piyathida played phenomenal in conditions that included some rain and wind. Now we're going to try to carry over our momentum into this weekend's tournament."
Toledo will now turn its attention to the Claud Jacobs Challenge presented by SCOR Golf being held on Sunday and Monday, Feb. 19-20 at the Victoria Country Club. UT will participate in a practice round tomorrow before beginning competition.
