FISHERS, IN - Toledo captured its first tournament title of the season on Tuesday by winning a playoff against Akron at The Preview. The event was played at the Hawthorns Golf & Country Club, the site of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championship.
The Rockets and Zips were tied at 45-over par 621 following 36 holes of competition. The ensuing team playoff saw junior Allison Schultz sink a birdie putt to give UT the victory. Toledo was down one stroke following the first group, but Akron had two bogeys in the second group to leave Schultz her opening.
The Rockets were one player short in the playoff as sophomore Kate Hoops didn't participate because she needed to leave early for her grandmother's funeral. UT registered three pars and a birdie, while the Zips recorded one birdie, two pars and two bogeys. Akron was able to drop its worst score.
"It certainly was an exciting day, I couldn't be more proud of our team," Toledo Head Coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. "We worked extremely hard in practice last week, and winning The Preview will be such a confidence builder. I think we learned a lot from our first tournament of the year at Illinois State, when we had a chance to win but didn't. We were able to stay focused and manage our emotions and that's the key to playing winning golf."
Senior Piyathida Chaiyapan led the Rockets by finishing in a three-way tie for second place at six-over par 150 (74-76). It was her second Top Five showing of the fall campaign. Schultz also enjoyed a solid tournament, registering a career-best 14th-place tie with an 11-over par 155 (78-77).
Freshman Becky Martin tied for 18th place at 12-over par 156 (75-81), Hoops tied for 29th place at 16-over par 160 (78-82) and freshman Jennifer Elsholz tied for 53rd place at 21-over par 165 (82-830. Freshman Stephanie St-Jean competed as an individual and tied for 41st place at 18-over par 162 (82-80).
Southern Illinois' Ryann Gilley earned medalist honors with a five-over par 149 (73-76), finishing one stroke ahead of Chaiyapan, IUPUI's Kristi O'Brien and Indiana State's Reece Feducia.
