Jeremiah Detmer Named to Lou Groza Award Watch List
TOLEDO, OH - Senior placekicker Jeremiah Detmer (Hilliard, OH) was today named to the official watch list for the Lou Groza Award, given annually to the nation's top placekicker.
Detmer has been an incredibly accurate kicker in his Rocket career. Over the past two seasons, he connected on 36 of his last 37 field goal attempts. He also kicked 44-of-45 extra points in 2013 to earn Mid-American Conference Special Teams Player of the Year and first-team All-MAC honors.
Detmer was named second-team preseason All-America by the Phil Steele and third-team preseason All-America by the Sporting News.
The Lou Groza Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
The 23rd Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl Committee, recognizes the three finalists during an early week celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet on December 9, prior to joining ESPN in Orlando.
