Toledo Drops MAC Weekend Series Finale at Miami, 5-3
OXFORD, OH – Toledo dropped a 5-3 decision against Miami in Sunday’s Mid-American Conference series finale at Hayden Park. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 17-25 overall, 8-10 in the league.
UT did not help its own cause in today’s rubber match, committing a season-tying worst four errors. The RedHawks’ (20-23, 10-8 MAC) took full advantage of those miscues, resulting in four of their five runs being unearned. Today’s setback also allowed Miami to secure the weekend series against cross-division foe Toledo, two-games-to-one.
Sophomore RHP Kyle Slack (3-5) was the hard-luck loser in the today’s contest, surrendering four unearned runs on only one hit with four walks and six punchouts in 3.2 innings of work.
Offensively, the Rockets outhit the RedHawks, 9-5, led by a season-high three hits each from sophomore 3B John Martillotta (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and sophomore RF Ryan Callahan (3-for-4).
Unfortunately, UT’s four-hit advantage was overshadowed by the four errors.
Martillotta had a fantastic series against Miami and posted a squad-best five hits with a team-high five RBI, batting a robust .556 (5-for-9).
The teams traded runs in the opening frame, with Toledo striking first on a RBI single off the bat of junior 2B Dan Zuchowski (1-for-4, RBI). MU plated its initial unearned tally on the strength of two stolen bases, one UT error and one Toledo passed ball.
Toledo quickly retook the lead on a run-scoring two-base hit by Martillotta in the second. With outs in the frame, the Chardon, OH native ripped a shot down the left-field line to score freshman LF Jake Krupar (0-for-1, RS) all the way from first base.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fourth when Miami registered three runs to assume an advantage it would not relinquish. All three tallies in the game-changing inning were unearned, ending the afternoon for UT’s Slack. The RedHawks benefitted from a two-run single by 3B Dan Walsh (1-for-4, 2 RBI), as well as three walks and another UT error to make the score 4-2.
After Miami added an insurance run on a RBI two-base hit by C Max Andresen (2-for-4, RS, RBI) in the seventh, Toledo closed out the scoring in its final at-bat on another RBI double from Martillotta to set the final difference at 5-3.
The RedHawks’ RHP Ryan Powers (5-3) was credited with today’s victory, surrendering two runs (one earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts in 7.0 frames. RHP Charles Zubrod came in relief of Powers and recorded the final six outs to collect his team-high fourth save this spring.
Toledo will now take the four days off to focus on spring semester exams before returning to the diamond next weekend, May 2-4, with a three-game series at Central Michigan. Friday’s first pitch from Theunissen Stadium is slated for 3:05 p.m.
