Rockets Belt Four Home Runs; Defeat Central Michigan 9-1 in Five Innings
TOLEDO, OH – The University of Toledo softball team capped off an impressive 9-1 win over Mid-American Conference West division foe Central Michigan Saturday, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth, incurring the run rule.
The Rockets (18-32, 8-15 MAC) belted four home runs in the game and outhit the Chippewas (31-16, 9-6 MAC) by a 12-1 margin.
Four Toledo hitters had multi-hit games and a total of eight players reached base off a hit. Senior 3B Lani Ernst and freshman 1B Celeste Fidge each went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while sophomore LF Jessica Lemieux added a 2-for-4 game with a home run and an RBI and junior Leigh Nebendahl pinch hit in the fifth inning and hit a three-run homer.
Freshman P Emily Anderson pitched a gem of a game, going five innings and allowing one hit with two walks and three strikeouts.
The Rockets got on the board first, scoring two runs in the opening inning off of Ernst's two-run homer over the left center field fence, bringing home freshman SS Chandler Rice. Rice also had a strong game, going 1-for-3 with two runs and a walk.
CMU added a run in the second inning to cut the Toledo lead to one, but UT plated two runs in the third on Fidge's bomb over the center field wall to put the Rockets up 4-1.
Toledo added another run in the fourth inning and exploded for four runs on Nebendahl's three-run home run and Lemieux's solo shot. Freshman Tasi Docktor had a multi-hit game as well, going 2-for-3 with a triple and scored on Nebendahl's four-bagger.
The Rockets conclude the weekend tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. game against the Chippewas.
