Rockets Drop 1-0 Nailbiter to RedHawks in MAC Series Opener
OXFORD, OH – Hits were at a premium for Toledo (16-24, 7-9 MAC) on Friday evening as senior LHP Ryan Wilkinson (4-4) was the hard-luck loser in a 1-0 setback at Mid-American Conference East Division foe Miami (19-22, 9-7 MAC).
Wilkinson allowed just one run and seven hits with no walks in eight innings of work against the RedHawks.
Senior LHP Seth Varner (6-2) earned the victory for Miami by fanning 12 Rockets in a complete-game effort. He leads the MAC with 77 strikeouts in 67.2 innings pitched this season.
Miami plated the game’s lone run on senior 3B Dan Walsh’s infield single in the bottom of the third inning.
Senior CF Tyler Grogg was the only Rocket to reach third base. He drew a one-out walk in the first inning and then stole second and third base before being stranded. Grogg also laced a one-out double down the left-field line in the fifth frame but couldn’t advance any further.
Junior 3B Dan Zuchowski accounted for UT’s only other hit of the contest with a one-out single in the third inning.
The two teams will resume their three-game series on Saturday. First pitch at McKie Field is set for 3:00 p.m. Freshman RHP Sam Shutes is slated to get the start on the bump for the Rockets.
