UT Tennis Travels to Northern Illinois For Conference Tilt
TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo men’s tennis team (9-15, 2-0 MAC) will put its undefeated Mid-American Conference record on the line when the Midnight Blue & Gold travels to Northern Illinois on Saturday, April 12.
“I think this will be another close match and another special opportunity for both teams,” head coach Al Wermer said. “We’ve had a lot of back and forth battles and I won’t be surprised if this is also.”
Toledo lost to the Huskies 6-1 last season.
The Rockets won their previous outing, defeating NAIA No. 20 Aquinas College 5-2 at Shadow Valley Tennis Club after opening the match by claiming the doubles point.
Freshman Boris Pak and junior Roberto Meza teamed up in No. 2 doubles to score an 8-5 win, while senior Ben Brocker and sophomore Ryan Jorgensen won 8-3 in the No. 3 spot.
Junior Mark Singnil and sophomore Garrett Cona led 7-6 in No. 1 doubles when the match was called early.
In singles, Singnil, the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, continued his hot play by winning his fourth straight match by the score of 6-1, 6-3 in the top singles spot. He leads the team with a 16-5 record on the year. Singnil is now a four-time winner of conference player of the week honors.
Cona also recorded a singles victory, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. Brocker's win in the No. 5 singles spot clinched the match for Toledo, and Pak added a victory in the final singles slot, 7-5, 7-5.
Northern Illinois enters Saturday’s match with a 16-5 overall record and is also 2-0 in the MAC. Seven separate Huskies have recorded double-digit wins, led by sophomore Simon Formont, who has a 17-2 record in dual-match play. NIU won its last match 4-0 in a non-league tilt with Illinois-Chicago.
The Rockets return home for their final regular season match on Saturday, April 19 against Western Michigan. The conference tournament begins Friday, April 25 in Muncie, IN.
