Rockets To Take On NAIA-Member Aquinas College
TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo men’s tennis team will take a short break from Mid-American Conference play for a Friday home match against Aquinas College at Shadow Valley Tennis Club. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
“As with most non-conference matches, we're only focused on improving for the future and for conference play,” head coach Al Wermer said. “This match even more so because it's in middle of the conference season.”
Aquinas College is 16-2 this year, following a 2013 season in which the Saints finished 25-5 with an NAIA No. 8 national ranking.
The Rockets improved to 2-0 in MAC play (8-15 overall) on Sunday, March 30 with a dramatic comeback victory to defeat Ball State 4-3.
Toledo fell in two of three doubles matches, receiving its only win from the duo of sophomore Garrett Cona and freshman Stjepan Sisko, who won 8-3 in No. 1 doubles. The win earned Cona and Sisko MAC Doubles Team of the Week for the second time this season.
In singles, the Midnight Blue & Gold dropped straight set decisions in the No. 3 and No. 4, but bounced back with three straight wins to tie the match at 3-3.
Sisko won 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles spot, junior Roberto Meza scored a 6-1, 6-3 win in No. 5 singles, and senior Ben Brocker fought through a three-set match in No. 6 singles with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win, tying the match at three with just the No. 1 singles spot remaining.
In No. 1 singles, junior Mark Singnil split the first two sets 6-4, 3-6 and closed out the match for the Rockets in the third set, winning 6-3, and giving Toledo the 4-3 victory.
Singnil’s efforts were recognized by the league office, as he was named MAC Singles Player of the Week for the fourth time this year.
Toledo will host a free tennis clinic following the match featuring Rocket players and staff.
The Midnight Blue & Gold gets back into conference play on Saturday, April 12 at 1:00 p.m. with an away match at Northern Illinois.
