Rockets Defeat Western Michigan 4-3 On Walkoff Hit

DEKALB, IL – The Toledo softball team won in thrilling fashion on Saturday at Northern Illinois' Mary M. Bell Field, defeating Western Michigan 4-3 in a Mid-American Conference contest on a walkoff double by senior RF Erinn Wright.

The Rockets were down to their final out when Wright stepped to the plate with senior 3B Lani Ernst on first and sophomore LF Jessica Lemieux on second. On the first pitch of the at bat, Wright roped the ball to left center as the centerfielder gave chase, ending the game when Lemieux and Ernst scored.

The Broncos opened up the scoring with one run in the first, but Toledo bounced back in the bottom of the inning as Ernst hit a 2 RBI double to left center, but was thrown out at first. Lemieux's single in the first extended her hitting streak to eight games, as she went 2-for-4 with two runs and a double.

Ernst ended the game with three hits (3-for-4), two RBI and one run.

Junior CF Alyssa Smith also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run on Ernst's double in the first inning.

The Rockets racked up 11 hits on the game and improved to 9-19 (1-1) on the season with the victory. Western Michigan falls to 9-20.

Freshman P Emily Anderson earned the win, her ninth of the season (9-10), as she pitched the final three innings of the game, allowing just a single hit and racking up four strikeouts.

In her first two innings of action, Anderson sat the Broncos down in order with two punchouts.

Toledo is back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Northern Illinois. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
