UT Women's Tennis To Take On Xavier In Cincinnati

TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo women’s tennis team returns from its spring break trip to Puerto Rico for a road match at Xavier on Friday, March 14. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

The Rockets are 8-3 on the year, their best record to begin a season since 2008, and went 2-0 on their trip to Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico, defeating Presbyterian and Long Island University.

In its first outdoor match of the season, the Midnight Blue & Gold won all nine of the matchups against Presbyterian.

Junior Lexy Pitt and sophomore Emily Mazzola earned an 8-7 victory in a tiebreaker in No. 1 doubles, while junior Pia Rygh and sophomore Katelyn Nguyen won 8-1 in the No. 2 spot, and sophomore Mackenzie Bowmand and freshman Lauren Thai posted an 8-7 win in No. 3 doubles.

Bowman and Thai improved to 7-3 on the season as a doubles team, while both of the other duos move to 6-4 overall.

In singles, senior Chrissy Coffman earned a win in the No. 1 spot when her opponent retired in the second set. Nguyen, Rygh, Pitt and Thai each were victorious in straight sets in No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Bowman secured a win in three sets, as she fought through a tiebreaker in the second set to improve to 5-4 on the season.

In their second match, the Rockets defeated Long Island 6-1, earning the doubles point to start the match, winning all three matchups.

Pitt and Mazzola won 8-7 in the No. 1 doubles spot, Nguyen and Rygh closed out their opponents 8-2 in No. 2 doubles, and Bowman teamed up with Thai to earn an 8-3 victory in the final doubles slot

Nguyen and Rygh now hold a five-match win streak and are 7-4 overall this season.

In singles, the Midnight Blue & Gold won five of the six matches.

Coffman improved to 8-3 on the season with her fourth straight win in No. 1 singles, and Pitt increased her win streak to five matches with a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the No. 4 singles slot.

Nguyen earned a straight sets victory in No. 2 singles, and Bowman fought through three sets to earn another win for the Rockets.

Toledo is back in action on Friday, March 21 in its first Mid-American Conference action with an away match at Akron.
