Rockets Defeat Long Island 6-1 To Improve to 8-3 On the Season

PALMAS DEL MAR, Puerto Rico - The Toledo women’s tennis team closed out its spring break trip on a high note, defeating Long Island University 6-1 on Saturday, March 8 to improve to 8-3 on the season.

The Rockets went 2-0 in Puerto Rico, and earned the doubles point to start the match against Long Island, winning all three matchups.

Junior Lexy Pitt and sophomore Emily Mazzola won 8-7 in the No. 1 doubles spot, sophomore Katelyn Nguyen and junior Pia Rygh closed out their opponents 8-2 in No. 2 doubles, and sophomore Mackenzie Bowman teamed up with freshman Lauren Thai to earn an 8-3 victory in the final doubles slot

Nguyen and Rygh now hold a five-match win streak and are 7-4 overall this season.

In singles, the Midnight Blue & Gold won five of the six matches.

Senior Chrissy Coffman improved to 8-3 on the season with her fourth straight win in No. 1 singles, and Pitt increased her win streak to five matches with a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the No. 4 singles slot.

Nguyen earned a straight sets victory in No. 2 singles, and Bowman fought through three sets to earn another win for the Rockets.

Toledo is back in action on Friday, March 14 with an away match against Xavier. Mid-American Conference play begins one week later, as the Rockets travel to Akron on Friday, March 21.
