Rockets Sweep Presbyterian 7-0 In Puerto Rico
PALMAS DEL MAR, Puerto Rico - The Toledo women's tennis team opened its spring break on a high note, defeating Presbyterian 7-0 in its first outdoor match in Puerto Rico.
"We did a great job handling the conditions in our first match outside since October," graduate assistant coach James Thorp said. "Presbyterian played a tough doubles point today and we were able to build momentum moving into singles after clinching a close point. It was great to come out in singles and play focused tennis throughout the entire match."
The Rockets won all nine of the matchups on the day.
Junior Lexy Pitt and sophomore Emily Mazzola earned an 8-7 victory in a tiebreaker in No. 1 doubles, while junior Pia Rygh and sophomore Katelyn Nguyen won 8-1 in the No. 2 spot, and sophomore Mackenzie Bowmand and freshman Lauren Thai posted an 8-7 win in No. 3 doubles.
Bowman and Thai improved to 7-3 on the season as a doubles team, while both of the other duos move to 6-4 overall.
In singles, senior Chrissy Coffman earned a win in the No. 1 spot when her opponent retired in the second set. Nguyen, Rygh, Pitt and Thai each were victorious in straight sets in No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Bowman secured a win in three sets, as she fought through a tiebreaker in the second set to improve to 5-4 on the season.
The Rockets will play their second and final match in Puerto Rico on Friday, when they face off against Long Island.
