UT Women’s Tennis Takes On Cleveland State In Only Match of the Weekend
TOLEDO, OH – The Rocket women’s tennis team will head to Cleveland for a match against Cleveland State on Saturday, Feb. 22. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
Toledo is coming off two wins last weekend, beating IPFW 4-3 and Bradley 6-1, improving to 5-3 on the season.
In their match against IPFW on Friday, Feb. 14, junior Pia Rygh and sophomore Katelyn Nguyen recorded the only victory in doubles play, winning a tough No. 2 matchup 8-6.
Junior Lexy Pitt and sophomore Emily Mazzola fell in a hard fought 8-7 decision in No. 1 singles, while sophomore Mackenzie Bowman and freshman Lauren Thai were handed their first loss since Jan. 17 in the No. 3 slot.
Heading into singles play down 1-0, the Rockets went on a tear as Nguyen, sophomore Emily Mazzola and junior Lexy Pitt won No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Nguyen improved to 5-2 in singles play this season with a 6-1, 6-3, straight-set victory. Mazzola also won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
In No. 5 singles, Pitt handled the first set 6-1, but suffered a 6-3 setback in set No. 2, before recovering for another 6-1 set victory.
The match came down to Rygh's No. 4 singles matchup against IPFW's Miloslava Shustova. Shustova won the first set 3-6, but Rygh battled back in the next two sets, winning each in a tiebreak. It was Rygh's first singles victory of the year.
On Saturday, the Rockets won all but one match on the day against Bradley, including all three doubles matchups.
Rygh and Nguyen scored their second victory of the weekend in No. 2 doubles, recording a 8-0 sweep, and improving to 6-2 on the year.
Pitt and Mazzola rebounded from a loss on Friday, narrowly earning an 8-7 win in No. 1 singles. Bowman and Thai also made up for their loss on Friday, winning 8-5 in the No. 3 doubles spot.
In singles competition, senior Chrissy Coffman improved to 5-3 in No. 1 singles, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Nguyen also earned a singles victory in the No. 2 slot, winning 6-4, 6-4, while Rygh, Pitt and Bowman were victorious in No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Pitt’s singles win boosted her record to 6-1 on the year.
The Rockets will travel to Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico for spring break and will play Presbyterian on March 4 and Long Island on March 8.
