UT Women’s Tennis Hits the Road For Two Matches in Fort Wayne
TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo women’s tennis team (3-3) will begin an eight-match road trip with two in Fort Wayne, IN this weekend. UT takes on IPFW on Friday, Feb. 14 at 1:00 p.m. and will face off against Bradley the following day beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The Mastodons of IPFW sit at 2-2 overall on the season, losing their last match to Cleveland State, while Bradley have compiled a 1-1 record and will face IPFW on Friday before taking on the Midnight Blue & Gold.
The Rockets split their previous two matches last weekend, defeating Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 8 and losing to Detroit the next day.
Toledo had never beaten UIC, a team that has won the Horizon League the past 17 years and has made the NCAA Tournament 15 times in a row.
The Rockets claimed the doubles point to open the day, as they won in both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles slots. Sophomore Katelyn Nguyen and junior Pia Rygh earned a 6-1 victory in the No. 2 spot, and freshman Lauren Thai and sophomore Mackenzie Bowman won No. 3 doubles with a dominating 6-0 performance.
Nguyen added a 6-1, 6-1 singles victory in the No. 2 spot, and junior Lexy Pitt put the Rockets up 3-0 with a win in No. 6 singles. Senior Chrissy Coffman would clinch the match with a 6-1, 7-5 victory in No. 1 singles, scoring the all important fourth point.
In its match against Detroit, Toledo lost the doubles point, but earned a doubles victory in the No. 3 spot as Thai and Bowman won 6-4.
Sophomore Emily Mazzola and Coffman posted the team’s only other wins on the day. Mazzola improved to 3-3 in singles play, earning a tough 6-2, 7-6 victory in No. 4 singles, while Coffman won in straight sets in the No. 1 spot.
The Rockets are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 22 with a match in Cleveland, OH against Cleveland State before traveling to Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico for two spring break matches.
