Ana Capotosto Garners MAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week Accolades
CLEVELAND, OH - Sophomore Ana Capotosto was named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week by the league office on Wednesday. Capotosto is receiving this honor for the first time in her collegiate career.
In addition, fellow Rocket men’s basketball player J.D. Weatherspoon secured the MAC’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week accolade.
An early childhood education major with a 3.78 grade-point average, Capotosto finished with a team-tying high 16 points and five caroms in a collegiate-tying best 35 minutes at St. Bonaventure last Sunday, Dec. 15. The Saugatuck, MI native shot 6-of-10 from the field against the Bonnies, including a career-tying best 3-of-4 from three-point land, and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to tally double figures for a third time this season. Capotosto returned to the starting lineup after missing the previous two contests with an ankle injury.
Overall in 2013-14, Capotosto is averaging 10.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.4 steals in 26.7 minutes per contest. She currently ranks seventh in the MAC in three-point field goal percentage (41.4%, 12-of-29), 13th in three-point field goals made (1.7) and 29th in scoring. The third-year Rocket is shooting a stellar 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from beyond the arc over her last four games.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives.
Capotosto and the Rockets (5-4) return to the hardwood on Sunday, Dec. 22 when they host Atlantic 10 power Dayton. The opening tip against the Flyers is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena.
