MORAGA, CA – Toledo dropped an 81-57 decision to Saint Mary’s (CA) on Saturday in the championship game of the SMC Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic in McKeon Pavilion. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 3-3 on the season.

UT was limited to a season-low 30.9 percent (21-of-68) from the field, including 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from three-point range, and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the charity stripe to suffer its worst setback since the early stages of the 2010-12 season (Lost 102-69 at Dayton on Dec. 5, 2010).

The Rockets were also guilty of a season-high 17 turnovers, compared to only 12 assists, marking the first time this year they had more miscues than helpers.

Junior Inma Zanoguera was the lone UT player in double figures with 12 points. Zanoguera has now scored in double digits in each of the last 10 contests, dating back to last season. The 2013-14 preseason All-Mid American Conference West Division Team honoree was also named to the all-tourney squad, averaging 13.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.0 apg and 1.5 spg in 37.5 mpg in the two games this weekend.

Freshman Janice Monakana was Toledo’s next high scorer with nine points off the bench, followed by sophomore Ana Capotosto with seven.

The Gaels (7-0) put four players in double figures, led by Danielle Mauldin’s game-high 21 points and contest-best 18 boards. The home team also received a double-double from Jackie Nared with 18 points and 10 caroms to remain unbeaten on the year.

As a team, SMC shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) from the floor and an impressive 83.3 percent (25-of-30) from the free throw line to extend its season-opening win streak.

The Rockets struggled from the outset and misfired on six of their first seven field-goal attempts to find themselves behind 8-2 at 16:42. To make matters worse, senior Janelle Reed-Lewis and senior Brianna Jones each picked up two quick fouls and were forced to the bench for the remainder of the period.

UT started to heat up a little from the floor as the opening period wore on, taking advantage of back-to-back triples from sophomore Ana Capotosto and junior Stephanie Recker to cut the deficit to 16-13 at 9:56.

Toledo was not able to sustain the momentum though, as Saint Mary’s (CA) pushed the margin to double digits on strong play by Mauldin to make the score 35-25 at 4:31. Mauldin knocked down her first five shots from the field to help the home team establish a 10-point bulge.

The closest UT would get for the remainder of the half was eight points, as the Midnight Blue & Gold trailed 39-29 at the intermission.

Saint Mary’s (CA) then started the second stanza by scoring the first five points to open up a 44-29 lead at 18:43, forcing Toledo into a timeout.

The Rockets would not be able to take advantage of the stoppage in play, as the Gaels utilized a 10-2 burst to stretch the difference to 61-43 with 8:58 left in regulation.

UT would not be to pull any closer and as a result suffered the 24-point setback.

The Rockets will return to the hardwood on Friday-Saturday, Dec. 6-7 when they host the second-annual Toledo Invite. UT will square off against Horizon League member Detroit in the opening game on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Toledo will then battle Horizon League participant Valparaiso in the second round on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
