Brown's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Rockets to 85-84 (OT) Exhibition Victory over Hillsdale
TOLEDO, OH – Junior guard Julius Brown dropped in a floater at the buzzer to lift Toledo to an 85-84 (OT) exhibition victory over a veteran NCAA Division II Hillsdale College squad on Sunday afternoon in Savage Arena.
Brown led the Rockets with 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists while committing zero turnovers in 38 minutes of action.
Senior guard Rian Pearson and sophomore center Nathan Boothe joined Brown in double figures with 18 and 14 points, respectively. Junior guard Justin Drummond (nine points), junior forward J.D. Weatherspoon (eight points) and freshman guard Jordan Lauf (eight points) each also made key offensive contributions in their debuts in a Rocket uniform.
Tim Dezelski topped the Chargers with 29 points and shot an incredible 8-of-9 from three-point range. As a team, Hillsdale converted 46.7 percent (14-of-30) of its long-distance attempts and posted a 53.3 FG% for the game.
Drummond’s slam with 41 seconds left in regulation tied the score at 74-74. The Chargers had a chance to win the game but Brandon Pritzl’s trey from the corner rimmed out.
Pearson then gave the Rockets an early 80-76 lead with 3:27 remaining in the extra session but back-to-back treys by Dezelski and Derek Schell put Hillsdale in front 84-80 with 1:07 to play.
Pearson hit a pair of free throws and Weatherspoon followed with one more to bring UT within 84-83 with 14 ticks on the clock. The Chargers’ Brandon Pritzi then missed two attempts from the charity stripe to set the stage for Brown’s heroics.
