Freshman Libero Ellen Hays Earned MAC West Division Player of Week Honors
TOLEDO, OH – Freshman libero Ellen Hays was honored for her strong defensive play this past weekend by being named the Mid-American Conference’s West Division Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. It is the second-consecutive week a Rocket has received a weekly honor from the league.
A Bedford, MI native, Hays helped Toledo extend its conference win streak to four matches with a pair of 3-2 victories over MAC West Division foes Northern Illinois and Western Michigan last weekend by averaging 5.00 digs per set and notching a .967 serve reception.
She tallied 26 digs against the Broncos after registering 24 defensive saves vs. the Huskies. Hays came up big late in each match for the Rockets, tallying nine digs vs. WMU in Set 4 and seven against NIU in Set 5. Hays also collected a career-high seven assists in the win over the Broncos.
Hays’ play over the last two weeks has helped UT win four straight conference contests for the first time in 12 years when it registered a four-game unbeaten stretch from Sept. 26 – Oct. 5, 2001.
Toledo hits the road this weekend to battle Ohio on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m. before visiting Kent State on Saturday, Oct. 19 for another 7:00 p.m. contest.
