Slow Start Dooms Toledo in 3-0 Setback at IPFW
FORT WAYNE, IN – Toledo (9-9) couldn’t overcome a slow start on Tuesday evening as the Rockets dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 26-14) decision at Summit League foe IPFW (10-10).
The Mastodons held a significant 49-37 advantage in the dig department which helped the hosts limit the Rockets to a .084 hitting mark.
Junior OH Emily Spencer paced IPFW with 17 kills and a .333 attack percentage, a figure that helped her squad post a .245 ATK%
“IPFW played very well tonight, and we didn’t come out with the type of approach we need to be successful,” Head Coach Greg Smith. “We started to get into a rhythm in the third set when we took an 18-12 lead, but we couldn’t sustain it. We’re going to have to play much better this weekend against Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.”
Toledo did hold a 9-7 lead in Set 1 only to see the Mastodons reel off five straight points for a 12-9 advantage. The Rockets regrouped to even the score at 13-13, but IPFW responded with another five-point burst as it pulled away for a 25-22 win.
UT fell behind quickly in Set 2 as the Mastodons scored the first six points, forcing the Rockets to call timeout. Toledo did score three straight points later in the stanza to climb within 21-15 but that was as close as it could get.
The Rockets registered their best performance in the match in the final set thanks to a 6-1 burst which put UT up by a 16-10 margin. Senior OH Jordan Kielty’s kill put Toledo up 18-12 but a 5-1 IPFW run forced the Rockets to call timeout. The Mastodons then took a 23-21 advantage with a four-point spurt, but UT rallied back to even the score at 23-23 on a Kielty kill and IPFW setting error. Kielty then added another blast to make it 24-24, but IPFW blocked her on the match’s final point for the win.
The Rockets are back in action this weekend when it hosts Northern Illinois on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m. followed by a 5:00 p.m. matchup vs. Western Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 12.
