Chrissy Coffman Crowned Flight Champion at BGSU Invitational
BOWLING GREEN, OH - Senior Chrissy Coffman won the No. 3 flight at this weekend’s BGSU Invitational as the women’s tennis team saw three singles players and one doubles team finish in the top three of their flight.
“We had some very solid performances this weekend,” head coach Tracy Mauntler said. “We had five players with winning singles records which shows the depth of our team this year.”
Coffman defeated opponents from Duquesne and IPFW in the first two rounds before winning 6-3, 6-3 against Katya Bure from the University of Cincinnati to claim the flight championship.
Sophomores Katelyn Nguyen and Mackenzie Bowman each placed third in flights one and four, respectively. Bowman fell to the No. 4 flight champion before defeating Marcy Huck from IPFW. Junior Emily Mazzola also finished third in flight No. 2.
In No. 1 doubles, a pair of Toledo doubles teams met in the third place match as Mazzola teamed up with junior Pia Rygh to defeat Nguyen and Bowman 8-4.
Freshman Kayleigh Hall lost her first round match against the eventual runner-up, Harley Hutchison from BGSU, but was able to win the consolation bracket, finishing fifth in No. 4 singles. She defeated Chandler Consonery 5-2 in the first set before Consonery retired in the second.
The tournament took place at BGSU’s Keefe Courts and Bowling Green High School until rain forced some matches to the indoor courts Perrysburg Tennis Center on Friday, Sept. 20.
Toledo begins a weekend tournament on Friday, Sept. 27 at the Spartan Invite in East Lansing, MI.
