TOLEDO, OH — Seniors Dakota Harkins and Jordan Kielty have been named captains for the Rockets’ 2013 campaign, Head Coach Greg Smith announced on Wednesday.

“Dakota and Jordan have consistently been looked upon as leaders by their teammates, and they’ve done a great job during preseason camp,” Smith said. “It was nice to see them recognized by our team’s vote, because I think they do a great job both on and off the court. That’s what leadership is about. It’s not just about the volleyball side of things.”

Smith added, “Our entire senior class has been great leaders during our preseason, and any of them could have been picked as our captains. They’ve all done an excellent job of making our six newcomers comfortable with our program.”

A 2012 second-team All-Mid-American Conference honoree, Harkins ranked fourth in the league with 1.06 blocks per set and sixth with a .296 attack percentage last year. She was also third on the team in kills per set (2.29) and totalled a career-high 13 blocks against MAC East Division champion Ohio.

Kielty led the Rockets with 0.24 service aces per set and ranked second on the team with 2.25 digs per set last season. She tallied a career-high 21 kills at Eastern Michigan (Nov. 10) and a career-best 19 digs vs. Eastern Michigan (Oct. 5) and was the only Rocket to play in all 102 sets.

Toledo opens its 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30 when it hosts Marist at Noon and Loyola (IL) at 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena on the first day of the Blue-Gold Invitational. The Rockets will also entertain Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 7:00 p.m. and West Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 2:00 p.m.

UT begins its 2013 MAC campaign on Friday. Sept. 27 with a trip to Mt. Pleasant, MI to face Central Michigan.
