TOLEDO, OH – First-year graduate assistant women’s tennis coach James Thorp earned a national championship at the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships over the weekend in Milwaukee, WI.

Thorp competed in the 20-24 year old category, placing first in his age group and fifth overall in the Sprint Distance Race on Aug. 11. The finish earned him a national championship for his age group and qualified him for Team USA at the World Championships in Edmonton next September. He also qualified for Team USA in the Olympic Distance Race on Aug. 10, finishing 11th in his age division and 27th overall.

The Olympic Distance Race consists of a 1,500-meter swim, 25-mile bike ride and 10-kilometer run, while the sprint distance race is half of the Olympic race with a 750-meter swim, 12.5-mile bike ride and 5-kilometer run.

In order to qualify for Team USA, Thorp needed to finish in the top 18 in his age category. He finished with times of 1:58.23 in Olympic distance and 1:01.23 in the Sprint Distance Race.

Although a native of Canberra, Australia, Thorp has lived in the United States for the last three years, giving him the opportunity to compete for Team USA. He graduated from South Dakota State in spring 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education and recreation with a business minor.
