Toledo Finalizes 2013-14 Roster with Addition of Janice Monakana
TOLEDO, OH - Head Coach Tricia Cullop announced today that Janice Monakana has joined the Toledo women’s basketball program. Monakana’s addition brings the Rockets’ incoming recruiting class size to four, including Lindsay Baker (Warsaw, IN), Olivia Braun (Racine, WI) and Sophie Reecher (Byron, IL).
A 6-foot-0 forward from London, England, Monakana averaged 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game for Newham Stars Club Team and 29.0 ppg for Haringey High School.
Monakana also plays for England’s National Team and contributed 6.1 points, 4.7 boards and 1.0 helpers per contest at last summer’s U18 FIBA European Championship - Division B in Strumica, Macedonia. She shot 33.3 percent (10-of-30) from the field and 79.3 percent (23-of-29) from the charity stripe in 18.0 minutes in seven games. Monakana ranked fifth in the league in free throw percentage and 13th in free throws made (3.3).
Monakana and the other three signees will look to soften the blow of losing last year’s five-member senior class - Kyle Baumgartner, Riley McCormick, Yolanda Richardson, Naama Shafir and Lecretia Smith - who helped the Rockets post a school-record 107 victories, winning a WNIT championship (2011), two MAC regular-season titles (2010-11, 2012-13) and four-consecutive division crowns (2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13), as well as advancing to the postseason each of the last four seasons.
