TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo (8-11, 2-4 MAC) captured its second win of conference play with a 4-3 triumph over Northern Illinois (14-7, 0-5 MAC) on Friday afternoon. The match was forced indoors at the Toledo Shadow Valley Club due to adverse playing conditions at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
"This was a great team win," UT head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "We definitely got more aggressive as we built our leads and that translated to great play. Pia, Emily and Chrissy played well at singles as all three of them took early leads and never looked back."
The Rockets were never threatened on the day as the Huskies claimed their three points after UT had clinched the match.
The Midnight Blue & Gold dominated doubles with easy 8-2, 8-1 victories at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Freshman Mackenzie Bowman teamed up with sophomore Pia Rygh at the second flight, while senior Silvia Carvajal and freshman Katelyn Nguyen took the third doubles match.
Sophomore Lexy Pitt and freshman Emily Mazzola fell in the top doubles match by a score of 8-6.
In singles, UT quickly clinched the match with straight-set wins at the second, third and fifth positions. Two of the three squad's losses went to three sets, while freshman Katelyn Nguyen went down in straight sets to NIU's top player.
Toledo will wrap up the regular season with two home matches next weekend. UT will host Akron on Friday, April 19 and Buffalo on Saturday, April 20. Both matches are slated for 1:00 p.m. on the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
