Toledo Softball Names Three Captains for Upcoming Season
Toledo, OH – The University of Toledo softball team named three captains for the 2013 season, head coach Tarrah Beyster announced today. Senior Morgan Smith and juniors Lani Ernst and Erinn Wright will lead the Midnight Blue and Gold this spring.
“We are very excited to have Erinn, Lani and Morgan take over the leadership role of the team," Beyster said. "They each possess different strengths and qualities. Together, they are the perfect combination of what we need to continue to move forward. I have confidence in the direction they will lead our program."
Smith, a native of Doylestown, OH, has started 89 career games behind the plate for the Rockets. In 56 games last season, Smith recorded 33 hits in 129 at-bats (.256 BA) with seven doubles, three home runs and 15 runs knocked in. She was fourth on the team in slugging and on-base percentage and finished tied for the team lead in walks (13). Smith also threw out 23 runners from behind the plate, completing the season with a .964 fielding percentage.
Infielder Lani Ernst has played in 105 games, starting all but two of those contests. A native of Milan, MI, Ernst has seen the majority of her playing time at third base for UT. She hit 39-for-157 (.248) on the right side of the plate with 24 RBI last spring. Ernst went deep four times and was tied for second on the team with 25 runs scored. She also swiped 10 bases in 14 attempts.
Wright was a staple in the UT lineup in 2010 and 2011 with a career batting average of .332 (79-for-238), leading the Rockets in hitting her freshman year with a .364 mark (44-for-121) and was named second-team all-conference. She redshirted last spring, and her versatilities will be used in a utility role this season. In 83 career games (82 starts), Wright has six home runs, 33 runs knocked in and a .445 slugging percentage.
Toledo will commence the 2013 campaign on Friday, Feb. 15 at the “Kick-Off” Classic in Boca Raton, FL. The Rockets are scheduled to play a doubleheader with Massachusetts and host Florida Atlantic.
