Rockets Notch Wins Over Notre Dame and DePaul at ITA's
Urbana, IL - The Toledo women's tennis team capped off the fall portion of its schedule today at the ITA Midwest Regionals in Urbana, IL. The Rockets' weekend was highlighted by victories over Notre Dame and DePaul.
"This event is so tough and every win is big," UT Head Coach Tracy Mauntler said. "Notre Dame is a Top 20 team and DePaul won't be far behind this year, so we'll take these wins with us into the offseason as we continue to improve."
Sophomore Lexy Pitt defeated Notre Dame's Jo Manningham 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in her opening round of singles qualifying play. The win marked the second-straight year UT has recorded a win over ND at regionals.
Then, senior Silvia Carvajal was matched up against Manningham in a consolation singles match and won in two sets, 6-1, 3-1. UT's lone senior also defeated Western Illinois' Rettger, 6-2, 6-3.
Freshman Emily Mazzola teamed up with Carvajal in the opening round for UT's only win in doubles play. The duo beat DePaul's combination of Sufi and Lawson, 8-6, before losing to Notre Dame in the second round.
Junior Chrissy Coffman and sophomore Pia Rygh also made the trip to Urbana, but failed to advance after dropping their first round qualifying matches.
Toledo will now head into the offseason to prepare for the winter and spring match seasons. The Rockets are slated to be back on the court on Jan. 23 at Ohio State.
