Rockets Set to Play at ITA Midwest Regionals
Toledo, OH - The Rocket women's tennis team will compete in its final tournament of the fall at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships from Thursday, Oct. 18 until Tuesday, Oct. 23. Toledo will join 23 other teams at the Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, IL as they battle for a spot in the ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships.
"This is a great opportunity to compete against the best players in the Midwest," UT coach Tracy Mauntler said. "Last year we proved that we can stand toe-to-toe against top teams in the country. We are looking to build on that success this year."
The tournament begins with a qualifying singles draw on Thursday, with players advancing to the 48-person main draw kicking off on Saturday. Doubles play begins Friday and will feature 48 of the region's top pairs. Doubles action will conclude on Monday, while singles play will end Tuesday.
Junior Chrissy Coffman and sophomores Lexy Pitt and Pia Rygh will play in the qualifying singles draw for the Rockets. Pitt and Rygh will also compete in the main doubles draw together. Senior Silvia Carvajal and freshman Emily Mazzola will team up in the main doubles draw as well.
Last year, Coffman advanced to the second round of the main singles draw at ITA's as a sophomore. According to Mauntler, Coffman played the singles match of her career when she knocked off Notre Dame's Chrissie McGaffigan. It marked the first time a UT player defeated Notre Dame in program history. Another program-first came when the doubles team of Kelsey Anonsen (now an assistant coach) and Lexy Pitt advanced to the quarterfinals.
Last week, UT hosted the Rocket Invitational as Mazzola and Carvajal each had perfect records in singles play. The Rockets will hit the courts again on Jan. 23 for a dual match at Ohio State.
