Toledo, OH - Two Rockets advanced to semifinal matches in their respective draws at the Spartan Invitational this weekend on Michigan State's campus. Toledo also performed well in doubles as one pair of Rockets advanced to a semifinal match while another claimed a consolation title.

"This was a solid event for us," Head Coach Tracy Mauntler said. "I think we showed our depth this weekend and what we are capable of."

Silvia Carvajal won her first two matches against Cleveland State's Nicole Janek (6-1, 6-2) and Xavier's Brooke Dennis (6-3, 1-6, 6-3), setting up a semifinal matchup against Keti Mebuke of Illinois-Chicago in Draw E. Mebuke proved to be too much though, defeating the lone Toledo senior 6-4, 6-4.

Freshman Katelyn Nguyen teamed up with Carvajal for a 3-1 record in doubles action. After losing their initial match, the duo won three consecutive matches against Wisconsin (8-4), Dayton (8-5) and Cleveland State (9-8(4)) for the Draw B consolation title.

I'm especially impressed by the doubles play of Silvia and Katelyn," Mauntler said. "This combo is showing some great chemistry and fight early on."

Mauntler was also impressed by junior Chrissy Coffman, who played her way to the semifinals with victories over Michigan State's Emily Meyers (6-0, 6-3) and Wisconsin's Helen Rabot (6-2, 6-7(4), 7-5).

"Once again Coffman showed that she is a gamer! She always steps it up when it matters."

Coffman ended up falling 4-6, 0-6 to eventual Draw D champion Kathryn Sharples (Illinois-Chicago) who didn't lose a set.

Coffman made another semifinal appearance in doubles action while teaming up with Emily Mazzola. The junior-freshman pair beat Xavier (8-6) and Ball State (8-0) before falling to Marquette (8-6).

"Emily Mazzola also took some big steps forward, getting four combined wins," Mauntler said. "I am proud of our team's effort and looking forward to next weekend."

No team scores were kept over the weekend.

Toledo will host the Rocket Invitational this week on Friday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 13.
