Two Rockets Go Unbeaten at Home
Toledo, OH - The Toledo men's tennis team finished the Rocket Invitational on Saturday with a combined 21-11 record, including a 15-7 mark in singles play. Junior Ben Brocker and freshman Matt Wareti went undefeated in the Rockets' second fall action of the year.
The two-day tournament became a part of Homecoming Weekend festivities around Toledo's campus, and featured solid competition in Ferris State, IUPUI and Wayne State. Play was delayed on both days as rain forced Friday's matches indoors. Saturday's slate moved back outdoors, but didn't start until Noon so the courts could dry. These postponements forced some matches to be played as one set.
"Other than the cool temperatures, this is the traditional fall event we love," Head Coach Al Wermer said. "Rocket tennis on our home courts among the bands, tailgating, crazy sports fans, music, inflatable games and football next door. This environment was awesome for our players and our sport."
Brocker won two singles matches, improving his record to 5-1 this fall by defeating Wayne State's Aman Gill (8-3) and Tyler Marengo of Ferris State (6-3, 6-1). Then, Brocker teamed up with Grant Adams for two wins over IUPUI and Ferris State in doubles play.
Matt Wareti captured his second and third victories of his career in singles. The true freshman defeated Wayne State's Oscar Gamarra (9-7) and IUPUI's Patrick O'Neill (6-3, 2-6, 10-8). He also teamed up with Roberto Meza for a doubles win against Ferris State (8-2).
"Other than some underwhelming doubles play in spots, we had good productivity." Wermer said. "This gave us a great chance to continue to coach and evaluate our guys. It was nice to see Matt and Benny have spotless weekends."
The Rockets continue the fall portion of their schedule at the ITA Midwest Regionals on Oct. 18.
