WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - Sophomore Nick Wong captured the Flight C Singles Championship Sunday afternoon, capping off Toledo's strong performance at the Purdue Invitational. Three other Rockets reached the semifinals of their flights as UT opened up their 2012-13 season.

"Our team was extremely impressive this weekend while showing a lot of improvement and resiliency as the week progressed," Head Coach Al Wermer said.

Wong won five matches while losing just one set en route to his first-career singles championship. He defeated Valparaiso's Danny Oakes (6-1, 6-2), Gary Notkin of Wisconsin-Green Bay (6-1, 6-3), Adam Reinhart of DePaul (7-6, 2-6, 7-5) and Sam O'Neill from Butler (6-3, 6-3) to reach the finals. Then he squared off against Purdue's Szymon Tatarczyk, taking two hard-fought sets (7-5, 6-2) for the trophy.

Fellow sophomore Grant Adams also made a deep run in the Flight C before falling to Tatarczyk (6-1, 6-4) in the semifinals. After receiving the first-round bye, Adams defeated Jeremy Depree of IPFW (6-2, 5-7, 6-0) and Paul John from DePaul (6-1, 5-7, 7-6(5)).

Senior Terence Weigand displayed great toughness and leadership while making a run to the semi's in the Flight A Consolation. The Winter Springs, FL native began his senior campaign losing to IUPUI's Jason Jaruvang (6-2, 6-2), but bounced back with a tough win over Daniel Kang of IPFW (4-6, 6-3). Then, he defeated Western Michigan's Michael Tries (7-5, 6-2) before Wisconsin-Green Bay's Erik Finkenbrink knocked him out (6-1, 6-4). Finkenbrink eventually won the consolation bracket.

Ben Brocker also made a run at a singles championship in Flight B. The lone UT junior advanced to the semifinals and won the first set (7-5) before dropping the next two (6-3, 6-4) to IUPUI's Nick Volz. Brocker had only lost one set heading into the match against Volz.

"Nick, Ben, Grant and Terence really showed strong character and leadership as they competed throughout the weekend," Wermer said.  "Coaches and players learned a lot and we're very excited to get back to work and prepare for the rest of the schedule."

The Rockets will hit the courts again when they host the Toledo Rocket Invitational on Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6.
