Toledo Plays Detroit to 0-0 Draw in Home Scrimmage
TOLEDO, OH - Toledo played Horizon League power Detroit to a 0-0 draw on Friday evening in an exhibition match at rainy Scott Park.
The Rockets finished with a 9-8 edge in shots and a 5-2 cushion in corner kicks, but the home team was unable to find the back of the net in its first competition of the season.
Sophomore Meghan Topolewski paced the UT offense with three shots, while freshman Megan Connor was credited with two shots.
A total of 22 Toledo players saw action in the 90-minute contest, and 11 Rockets logged more than 50 minutes in the stalemate.
Between the posts, sophomore Kelsey Borowitz and freshman Sam Tiongson split time and combined to make four stops in the shutout.
The Titans had the best two scoring chances in the first half off the foot of Kaitlyn Quarrell. The first opportunity came off a cross from Nina Carter at 30:09. The midfielder Carter put a ball in from the right side to Quarrell, who flicked it just high over the crossbar from about five yards out.
Quarrell's other scoring chance occurred just seconds before the intermission when she made a run toward the middle of the pitch from the left side and fired a shot from approximately 20 yards out that UT's Borowitz made a diving save on to keep the match scoreless.
In the second stanza, Detroit's Alyssa Riley found herself unmarked on the front post following a Sarah Dzuris corner kick and received a pass from Abby McCollum, but barely touched it over the crossbar at 51:35.
UT's best scoring chance in today's exhibition contest happened when Connor blasted a shot from approximately 25 yards out that just slid over the crossbar in the 62nd minute.
Moments later, Detroit's Carter maneuvered herself past the last line of the UT defense and was one-on-one with UT keeper Tiongson. Fortunately for the two-time reigning Mid-American Conference regular-season champions, Carter pushed the ball too far in front of her and Tiongson was able to corral the loose ball to preserve the draw.
Quarrell led the visitors with three shots, while McCollum and Riley had two shots each.
Toledo returns to action on Friday, Aug. 17, to begin its regular season at Big Ten member Purdue. The opening whistle from the Varsity Soccer Complex is slated for 7:00 p.m.
