Women's Tennis Releases Schedule for 2012-13 Season
TOLEDO, OH - University of Toledo head women's tennis coach Tracy Mauntler announced the 2012-13 schedule Friday afternoon. The fall slate features three invitationals and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional. The winter/spring schedule includes two dual matchups against Big Ten opponents, eight home dual matches, a spring break trip to Orlando and eight Mid-American Conference matchups.
"I'm extremely excited to get the players on campus to start working together for this upcoming season," said Mauntler. "Our fall schedule will give us some good competition to help us get ready for the dual matches this winter and spring."
The first invitational is scheduled at Bowling Green (Sept. 21-22) and then the Rockets will travel to Michigan State for the Spartan Invite (Oct. 5-7). Toledo will return home to host the Rocket Invitational (Oct. 12-13) before heading to the ITA Midwest Regional at the University of Illinois (Oct. 18-23).
"We had great results at the ITA Midwest Regional last year with wins over Northwestern and Notre Dame," said Mauntler. "Alexa Pitt and Christine Coffman had a taste of competing at the highest level against those teams, and we will be looking forward to experiencing that level of competition again at the University of Illinois."
Toledo finished last season with a 7-6 non-conference record and will receive an early test when they open play on the road against Ohio State (Jan. 23). The Rockets then return home for three matchups against Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (Jan. 25), Youngstown State (Jan. 26) and Cleveland State (Feb 1).
The second road trip will send the Rockets to East Lansing, MI as they try to erase a four match losing streak to Michigan State (Feb. 2). Toledo returns home a week later for two dual matches against Big East member Cincinnati (Feb. 9) and California University of Pennsylvania (Feb. 10).
The Rockets will finish up the winter schedule on the road against Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Feb. 15), Illinois-Chicago (Feb. 16) and Duquesne (Feb. 22) before traveling to Orlando, FL on their spring break trip (March 2-9).
Toledo will start off the spring portion of the schedule when they host a dual match against non-conference opponent James Madison (March 6).
Conference matches will be played on five consecutive weekends as Toledo hopes to bounce back this spring after finishing with a 2-6 conference record last season. MAC play will open up at rival Bowling Green (March 22). The Falcons clipped the Rockets 3-4 in last year's regular season finale in Toledo. The Rockets will then play on the road against Western Michigan (March 23), Eastern Michigan (March 29), Ball State (April 5) and Miami (OH) (April 6).
The conference home-opener is scheduled against Northern Illinois (April 12). Toledo will host two-time defending conference champion Akron the following weekend (April 19), and close out regular season play at home against Buffalo (April 20).
The conference championship will be held on the Ball State campus in Muncie, IN (April 26-28), with the winner earning the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Championships. The final rounds of this year's NCAA team competition, as well as all rounds of the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will be hosted by Illinois (May 16-27).
The 2012-13 Rockets will return four players from last year's squad, led by senior Silvia Carvajal and junior Christine Coffman. Two sophomores, Lexy Pitt and Pia Rygh, return as well.
A trio of four-star recruits headline the freshman class, including Katelyn Nguyen, Mackenzie Bowman and Emily Mazzola.
