MONROE, MI - Former Rocket Piyathida Chaiyapan (Bangkok, Thailand) posted a 3 & 2 triumph over University of Texas incoming freshman Tezira Abe on Wednesday to advance to the Round of 32 at the 112th Women's Western Golf Association National Amateur Championship. The tournament is being played at the Monroe (MI) Golf & Country Club.

Chaiyapan shot a 10-over par 154 in Monday's and Tuesday's qualifying rounds before upsetting Abe, who tied for eighth in the qualifier at two-over par 146 (77-69). Her opponent for Thursday's match will be announced later this evening.

Senior Allison Schultz (Cincinnati, OH) also competed in the championship flight but lost 2 & 1 to Sarah Ababa.

Other Rockets participating in afternoon matches are sophomore Lauren Stephens (Dublin, OH), sophomore Megan Carroll (Cleves, OH) and junior Kate Hoops (Lima, OH). Stephens dropped her second-flight match to Taylor Clark, 3 & 2. Carroll (6 & 5) and Hoops (1-up) each won their third-flight matches over Lelesse Mocio and Natalie Schmett, respectively.
